마르타 바탈랴는 세 편의 소설을 집필한 작가이다. 고국 브라질에서 기자로 활동하며 출판사를 설립한 바 있다. 2008년에 미국 뉴욕으로 이주하여 뉴욕대학교(NYU)에서 출판학 석사 학위를 취득한 후 한동안 출판계에 종사하였다. 데뷔작 『보이지 않는 삶』으로 자부티 문학상과 상파울루상 최종 후보에, 그리고 오셔너스상과 더블린 문학상 후보에 올랐다. 『보이지 않는 삶』은 전 세계 18개에서 출간되었으며 영화로 제작되어 칸 영화제 ‘주목할 만한 시선상’을 수상했다. 현재 미국 캘리포니아주 산타모니카에 거주하며 브라질의 주요 언론사 ‘오 글로보(O Globo)’ 신문에 글을 기고하고 있다.
Martha Batalha is the author of three novels. She worked as a reporter and founded a publishing company while living in Brazil, where she is originally from. She moved to New York in 2008, did a Master in Publishing at NYU and worked in publishing for a while. Her debut novel, The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao (A vida invisível de Eurídice Gusmão) was shortlisted for the Jabuti and São Paulo award and longlisted for the Oceanos and Dublin award. It was published in eighteen territories and the film adaptation won the Prize Un Certain Regard at the Cannes festival. Martha writes for O Globo, a major Brazilian newspaper. She lives in Santa Monica, California.
