Crossing the Bridge of Language
우리는 언어의 다리를 건너 세상 안으로 들어왔습니다.
언어를 배우면서 우리는 태초의 어둠으로부터 빠져나와
가족, 친구, 이웃들이 살아가는 세상의 빛 속으로 건너왔습니다.
언어를 배운 덕분에 우리는 나르키소스의 연못가에서 떨어져나와
우리 공동체들의 규범과 가치, 기억과 지식을 얻었고, 그리하여 인간이 되었습니다.
그러나 언어의 다리를 건너 우리가 들어온 세상은 하나가 아닙니다.
우리의 모국어는 인류가 스스로를 표현하는 다수의 언어 중 하나에 불과하며
모국어에 의해 전수된 문화는 그 언어만큼 다수인 문화 중의 하나에 불과합니다.
우리는 우리의 언어 안에서 편안하지만 우둔하고, 유식하지만 아집이 많습니다.
우리의 언어 덕분에 우리가 획득한 인간성은 바로 그 언어에 의해 제한되어 있습니다.
언어의 다리를 건너 세상 안으로 들어온 우리는
언어의 다리를 건너 세상 밖으로 나가려 합니다.
아시다시피 문학은 이상한 언어입니다.
언어의 법칙에 숙달된 언어이면서 언어의 법칙을 위반하는 언어입니다.
문화의 목적에 봉사하는 언어이면서 문화에 저항하는 언어입니다.
제한하는 문화를 극복하기 위해,
편협한 인간성을 초월하기 위해 우리는 문학을 가지고 있습니다.
동아시아 문학과 철학의 어떤 전통은 진리에 대한 이름은 진리가 아니라고 가르치고,
말의 길이 끊어진 자리에 실재가 있다고 일깨웁니다.
이것은 우리 각자 언어적, 문화적 한계를 넘어 사유하라는 제안과 같습니다.
서울국제작가축제가 그 한계를 만나는 동시에 그 한계 너머를 엿보는 기회가 되기 바랍니다.
We have crossed the bridge of language and entered into the world. As we learn language, we escape from primordial darkness and head into the light of the world where our family, friends, and neighbors live. Thanks to learning language, we have left the pond of Narcissus, acquired the norms, values, memories, and knowledge of our communities, and thus we’ve become human.
However, the world we have entered after crossing the bridge of language is not one. Our mother tongue is only one of many languages in which mankind expresses itself, and the culture transmitted by that mother tongue is only one of many cultures.
We are comfortable, but short-sighted in our language; knowledgeable, yet self-obsessed. The humanity we have acquired thanks to our language is limited by that very language. Having entered into the world by crossing the bridge of language, we are about to head back over that same bridge and depart outside of our world.
As you know, literature is a strange language. It’s a language that has mastered the laws of language, and also it is a language that violates the laws of language. It serves the purposes of culture and resists culture at the same time. To overcome a restrictive culture, to transcend our narrow-minded human nature, we have literature.
Some East Asian traditions in literature and philosophy teach us that ultimate truths have no name, that words don’t offer access to the Real. This suggests each of us should think beyond our linguistic and cultural limitations. We hope that the Seoul International Writers’ Festival will be an opportunity to encounter those limits and to see beyond them.
서울국제작가축제는 국내 독자들의 문학 향유 기회를 확대하고, 한국문학과 세계문학이 서울을 무대로 쌍방향 교류하는 토대를 만들고자 지난 2006년부터 개최해 온 글로벌 문학 축제로, 2022년까지 총 58개국 295명의 국내·외 작가를 초청했습니다. 문학을 매개로 하여 세계와 언어, 삶과 문학, 작가와 독자가 이루는 다층적인 힘에 주목하여 국제적 규모와 위상을 갖춘 축제로 발돋움하고자 합니다.
Launched in 2006, the Seoul International Writers’ Festival (SIWF) is a global literary festival aimed at expanding opportunities to enjoy literature and providing a platform for international exchange in Seoul. Between 2006 and 2021, a total of 295 writers from 58 countries were invited to take part. By focusing on the multilateral impact created by writers and readers as well as life and literature, the SIWF aspires to develop into a festival of international renown and scale.
한국문학번역원은 문화체육관광부 산하 공공기관으로, 1996년 설립된 이래 한국문학의 발전과 세계화를 위해 노력해 왔습니다. 그동안 한국문학번역원은 한국문학의 번역출판지원, 국내외 문학 교류와 해외 홍보, 한국문학 및 한국어 예술문화 콘텐츠 전문번역가 양성, 한국문학 홍보 콘텐츠 제작 등 다양한 사업을 추진하였습니다. 그 결과 세계무대에서 한국문학 수요가 증가하였고 한국문학 번역 출간 활성화-독자와 시장에서 안착-언론의 관심 및 문학상 수상으로 이어지는 선순환 구조가 형성되었습니다. 이제 그간의 성과를 바탕으로 문학 한류 성장기를 주도하며 ‘세계문학으로서의 한국문학’의 위상을 더욱 높이는 중추 역할을 수행하고자 합니다.
Korean Literature as World Literature
Established in 1996 for the purpose of developing and globalizing Korean literature, the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) is a public organization affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. LTI Korea’s various programs include translation and publication grants, literary exchange, overseas promotion, and educational courses for translators of Korean literature as well as Korean-language arts and culture content. LTI Korea has successfully increased the demand for Korean literature in the global market, and created a virtuous cycle whereby overseas publication of Korean literature and the expansion of international readership have led to growing media attention and numerous literary awards. In the future, LTI Korea will continue to lead the literary Korean wave, and play a pivotal role in enhancing the status of Korean literature as world literature.
