Andrey Kurkov Novelist Ukraine
Ukrainian writer, Andrey Kurkov, was born in Leningrad in 1961 and spent his childhood years in Kiev, Ukraine. He is a writer, filmscript-writer, essayist, author of 15 novels; Death and the Penguin, The President’s Last Love, The Night Milkman and 7 books for children. His books are translated into 33 languages. There are more than 20 films━features, documentaries, shorts and TV-films━based on his scripts. In 1997, He was shortlisted by European Film Academy in Berlin for Best European Screen-writer Award for his film-script A Friend of the Deceased. In 2001, he was awarded the Writer of the Year in Ukraine. His book, Death and the Penguin, was voted ‘The book of the year’ in Basel, Switzerland, in 2002. He writes reviews, essays and articles for The Guardian, New Statesman, Die Welt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and others. He is also a member of European Film Academy, Writers’ Union of Ukraine and International Man-Booker Prize committee. He now lives in Kiev, Ukraine being married with three children.
