봄이 무르익는 2006년 5월 7일부터 13일까지 일주일간, 4개 대륙 15개 국가의 젊은 작가 36명이 서울에 모였습니다. ‘문학’을 화두로 세계의 젊은 작가들이 만나 문화적 물리적 국경을 뛰어넘어 소통을 극대화하기 위한 장을 마련한 한국문학번역원의 초대에 한국에선 김연수, 김탁환, 하성란, 한강, 천운영 등 20명이, 외국에선 폴리 클락(영국), 야코프 하인(독일), 마르셀로 비르마헤르(아르헨티나), 피터 캠피온(미국), 히라노 게이치로(일본) 등 16명의 작가들이 참여하였습니다.
작가들은 6박7일 동안 함께 먹고 자고 생활하면서 문화적 “새로움”에 대해 토론을 벌이고, 영주 등지에서 한국 전통문화를 체험하기도 했습니다. 미지의 작가들과 낯선 언어로 문학을 소통하는 것. 참가 작가들의 에세이와 행사 사진을 통해 첫 축제의 즐거운 기억을 공유하고자 합니다.
The Newness
From May 7th to 13th, 2006, thirty six young writers from fifteen countries and four continents gathered in Seoul. Korea Literature Translation Institute invited young writers from all over the world to cross the cultural, physical borders and maximize their mutual understanding. Twenty Korean writers including Kim Yeonsu, Kim Takhwan, Ha Seong-nan, Han Kang, Cheon Un-yeong and sixteen foreign writers including Poly Clark(UK), Jakob Hein (Germany), Marcelo Birmajer(Argentina), Peter Campion(USA) and Hirano Keiichiro(Japan) participated in this festival.
The writers ate, slept and lived together for seven days to discuss the cultural “newness.” They also experienced Korean traditional culture in Yeongju and in other places. We want to share the joyful memories of communicating literature in an unfamiliar language with unknown writers in our first festival through essays and photos.
