독자가 언어를 통해 작가와 조우하는 공간
애트우드는 작가와 독자, 그리고 매개체로서의 책을 ‘영원한 삼각관계’라고 표현했다. 작가와 독자는 연결되지 않은 삼각형 “V”의 양꼭지점에 있고, 작가와 독자 사이 연결되지 않은 공간에는 지면이 있다고 했다.
애트우드의 표현처럼 독자가 지면을 펼치면 작가를 만나게 된다는 점에서 착안하여, ‘독자의 시선’이 언어를 통해 작가와 조우하는 순간을 포착하기 위해 이번 전시를 기획했다. 또한, 전시를 통해 독자가 작가를 만나는 방식을 시각적으로 구현하려 했다.
독자는 여러 나라의 언어의 다리를 건너 작가의 작품 안으로 들어간다. 그 안에서 ‘독자의 시선’과 ‘작가의 시선’이 교차하는 지점을 만나게 될 것이다. 이는 문학을 매개로 언어적, 문화적 한계를 넘어 세계와 언어, 삶과 문학, 작가와 독자가 이루어내는 다층적인 힘을 보여주고자 하는 서울국제작가축제의 기획 의도이기도 하다.
2023 Seoul International Writers’ Festival Exhibition <Through Readers’ Eyes>
Margaret Atwood describes the relationship between the writer, the reader, and the medium of the book as an “eternal love triangle.” She writes that the writer and reader are disconnected at two ends of a “V.” Between them, in the space where they are not connected, there is the page.
Like Atwood’s characterization, just like the point where a reader meets a writer when they open the page, this exhibition was planned to capture the moment when the “Readers’ Eyes” encounters the author through language. In addition, through the exhibition we tried to visually materialize the way in which the reader meets the author.
The reader enters the author’s work by crossing bridges made of languages from many countries. Within the work is the intersectional point where the “Readers’ eyes” and the “Author’s eyes” meet. Our aim is to illustrate how the multi-layered power that comes from the reader and author, life and literature, and the world and language moves us beyond cultural and linguistic limitations. This is also the aim of the Seoul International Writers’ Festival.
